Sheboygan Symphony's February 3rd Concert Will Spotlight Local Connection To A Popular Composer

The Sheboygan Symphony invites all to its midwinter concert which will touch upon nature in all its beauty and feature a local connection to a contemporary composer.

Kevin Brochure1Music Director, Kevin McMahon stated, “Opening the concert is Carl Maria von Weber’s Der Freischütz Overture, a work breathing the fresh, fragrant air of German Forests.

Following this we will present Franz Joseph Haydn’s popular and well-known Symphony 94.  The work is known as the “Surprise” Symphony.”

McMahon continued, “American composer Christopher Theofanidis visited Sheboygan in 2003, for a performance of his Rainbow Body.  The composer wrote to the orchestra asking if we would consider a reprise of the work, and happily, we are presenting the work this concert season.  The title refers to ideas of light and energy in Tibetan Buddhism.  The work is based on a hymn by mystic, Christian composer Hildegard von Bingen.  She lived from 1098-1179.”

Theofanidis has had performances by many leading orchestras from around the world, including the London Symphony, the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Atlanta Symphony, the Moscow Soloists, the National, Baltimore, St. Louis, and Detroit Symphonies, among many others.  He has also served as Composer of the Year for the Pittsburgh Symphony during their 2006-7 season, for which he wrote a violin concerto for Sarah Chang.

The concert closes with one of the great orchestral works, Claude Debussy’s La mer,   Debussy’s impressionistic view of the sea.
