The Sheboygan Area Youth Symphony is pleased to announce the names of their new directors for the Concert Orchestra and Sinfonia. The SAYS Concert Orchestra will be directed by Michael Lund Ziegler and SAYS Sinfonia will be led by director Fabian Qamar.
Lund Ziegler stated, "I am very excited to be joining the SAYS community and look forward to a wonderful season of music making. Having heard each member of the orchestra during auditions, I feel fortunate to be inheriting such a talented group of young people and am excited by the possibilities ahead. Together, I know we will make great music and memories during the 2016-2017 season."
In addition to his new position of Director of the Concert Orchestra, Lund Ziegler is Director of the Ripon College Orchestra and serves as President of the Board and Music Director for Music for the Sake of Music in Green Bay, WI. The organization offers a summer program consisting of private instrumental instruction to students of all ages and a symphony orchestra and wind ensemble for advanced students, community members and area professionals. With a focus on individual students and a high level of artistic expectation, this program has grown to over 150 participants, connecting community members and organizations.
Lund Ziegler served as music instructor for orchestras, bands and choirs at Aldo Leopold School in Green Bay where he increased overall participation to 96% in these performing ensembles. Previous positions include Assistant Conductor, Muncie Symphony Orchestra- Muncie, IN; Music Director for East Central Indiana Chamber Orchestra- Muncie, IN; Music Director of the Youth Symphony Orchestra of East Central Indiana-Muncie, IN; and Graduate Assistant Conductor at Ball State University-Muncie, IN. Lund Ziegler has a Master of Music Degree from Ball State University with a focus on orchestral conducting.
Sinfonia Director, Qamar, is currently the director of the Sheboygan Symphony Orchestra Chorus, serves as assistant director of music and principal organist at St. Stanislaus Oratory in Milwaukee and specializes in strings, voice, and piano as a private music instructor.
Qamar declared, "It has been impressive already to meet such dedicated staff and parents and to meet and hear young musicians who both enjoy what they do and take it seriously. I am very excited to begin making music with these fine young people."
At Lakeland University, Fabian completed a conducting internship with Sheboygan Symphony Orchestra’s Music Director and Conductor Dr. Kevin McMahon. During that time he conducted the Lakeland College Concert Choir as a student conductor in performances on campus and while on tour. From 2010–2014 Fabian held the positions of assistant conductor and organist for the Holy Name of Jesus Latin Choir in Sheboygan. Previously he directed the St. Joseph Oratory Youth Choir and Schola and guest conducted the Stella Maris Combined Parishes’ Latin Mass Choir at locations throughout Door County. Qamar holds a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Wisconsin - Madison.
SAYS was established to provide a meaningful, enriching musical experience for the Sheboygan area’s young musicians. It is our desire to augment the musical offerings of the area schools in order to provide students additional instruction and performance opportunities. The Sheboygan Area Youth Symphony has found that most of these students stay involved in music throughout their lives.

Students currently enrolled in any elementary, middle or high school and all home-schooled students are eligible and encouraged to audition for SAYS. Participation in school instrumental ensembles is required unless the appropriate ensemble is not in the curriculum.
Each trimester of rehearsals ends with a public performance, scheduled for November, January, and April. In addition, SAYS presents annual spring tour performances for area schools.
Rehearsals are held Monday evenings, from September through April. Sinfonia rehearses from 4:30 to 6 p.m., with strings beginning at 4:30 and winds joining at 5:00. The Concert Orchestra Strings begin at 6:30 p.m., and winds join at 7 p.m. Concert Orchestra rehearsals end at 9 p.m.
