Sheboygan Symphony Celebrates American Classics March 10

The Sheboygan Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Kevin McMahon, presents the March Concert - named “Spring” with American Classics.  The theme itself refers to Robert Schumann’s First Symphony, known as “Spring” as well as two works by American composers Alan Hovhaness and Lukas Foss.  Orchestral musicians suggested two of the five works on the program.

Kevin Brochure1McMahon explained, the program opens with popular, operetta music, Franz von Suppe’s Poet and Peasant Overture. Following that we will spotlight music by Alan Hovhaness, titled “And God Created Great Whales,” which includes recorded sounds of whales in addition to the orchestra.”

“The first half concludes with composer Lukas Foss and his Renaissance Concerto for Flute,” stated McMahon.  “Foss was deeply interested in music of earlier times, and this work contains both Baroque and Renaissance tributes to composers, which include Rameau and Monteverdi.  The attribute Foss sought is ‘jouissance.’”

After intermission the orchestra will present Mozart’s Mitridate Overture. McMahon stated, “Mozart wrote his opera Mitridate at age 14.   We are delighted to share this early work of the great composer.  The program concludes with Schumann’s blissful, Symphony No. 1 “Spring.” Robert Schumann’s four symphonies are among the treasures of the symphonic repertory.”

Carol WincencThis concert will feature Carol Wincenc, guest flautist, performing Foss’ Renaissance Concerto.  Hailed "Queen of the Flute" (New York Magazine) at the outset of her now, stellar 45 year career, flutist Carol Wincenc continues to delight audiences with her signature charismatic, high virtuosity and deeply heartfelt musicality. Whether concerto soloist, Grammy winning recording artist, devoted chamber music performer, or professor/mentor to now luminaries in the professional flute world, Wincenc continues to be the muse of today's legendary composers, including Rouse, Foss, Gorecki, Tower, Heggie, Higdon, Schoenfeld, Uebayashi, and Musical America's "Composer of the Year," Tod Machover.

Her numerous books and publications with Lauren Keiser/Hal Leonard receive praise and acclaim in the series, The 21st Century Complete Flutist. She has been an Artist Faculty member at Stony Brook University, and her alma mater, the Juilliard School for four decades collectively. She had the privilege of working directly with such legendary musical luminaries as Aaron Copland, Olivier Messaien, Jean Pierre Rampal, YoYo Ma, Jessye Norman, Rudolf Serkin, Joshua Bell, Christoph Eschenbach, Loren Maazel, Michael Tilson Thomas, Philip Glass, Andre Previn, Paul Simon and Judy Collins to name a few.
